Back from holidays

Well, I have been away for a month, to be honest, and this has happened for the first time in my life. I was away from the gym, away from work, away from everything literally, even away from healthy food. It may sound weird but the places I visited had only fried potatoes for carbs (unfortunately) and for protein, well, fish and meat, which was excellent (whilst a lot of the fish was fried at some places).

As the holidays come to an end, and I have been away for a long time, I didn’t stop researching about diet and fitness in order to bring the best to you. I finished my second (and last) Diet & Nutrition course from IFBB and I would like to share a few tips with you, on how to not gain body fat whilst being on holiday.

First of all, since I paused the gym for a month, I know I didn’t burn the same amount of calories even though I swam every day. That is the reason I cut out from my original 7 meals a day to only 3 plus a snack and the portions were smaller. Was I hungry? A bit yes but you have to pay the price in order to stay fit and healthy. So my first tip is, to cut out a few meals when you are on holiday and try counting the calories you consume.

Second of all, even though you are away, it doesn’t mean you have to stop moving around or stop doing activities and sit around eating all day. If you are inactive whilst on holiday you will most probably gain fat so try staying active. Try out new activities, and adventures, go for road trips, hiking, swimming and play games. Did you know that thinking and fidgeting burns calories as well? Well, now you do.

Third of all, know beforehand that you will probably lose some muscle. Staying out of the gym for 10 consecutive days starts the procedure of minimizing muscle. Your organism, since you don’t use your muscles to push or pull heavy objects, wants to get lighter in order to make your daily life easier, so it starts slowly (really slowly) to lose muscle. So, anticipate that you will lose muscle, and as soon as you are back, hit the gym with a full-body workout and take it slow. You will need time to adjust back to the gym.
