A Number to Remember: 10 Hours

While sitting is an unavoidable part of daily life, it's important to be mindful of how much time you spend seated each day. Recent research indicates that sitting for over 10 hours daily can increase the likelihood of developing dementia by nearly 10 percent. The risk grows significantly when sitting extends beyond 12 hours, and those who sit for 15 hours a day are three times more likely to develop the condition.

Interestingly, this connection is independent of time spent at the gym. The critical factor is staying active throughout the day. For those who sit less than 10 hours, the risk appears to be minimal. Therefore, it’s crucial to incorporate movement into your routine as much as possible. This can be as simple as walking around your home, taking phone calls on the move, or standing up at your desk periodically. By integrating these habits, you can help mitigate the risks associated with prolonged sitting.
