Lycopene: Not just a pump for oral health but a source of overall health

Incorporating lycopene into your diet can significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and enhance skin health. Research indicates that lycopene offers a variety of heart-protective benefits, including antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-atherogenic, cardioprotective, and anti-platelet effects. While these terms may seem technical, they collectively point to improved heart health. Additionally, studies have shown that lycopene supplementation can help lower blood pressure.

Furthermore, a diet rich in lycopene provides several skin benefits. It can protect your skin from UV damage, aid in the recovery from sun exposure, prevent sunburns, and even boost procollagen levels, resulting in more youthful-looking skin.

To increase your lycopene intake, consider adding sundried tomatoes or tomato puree to your meals, as these are among the richest sources. Lycopene is also found in regular tomatoes, watermelon, guava, and grapefruit, among other foods. While it's best to obtain lycopene through dietary sources, even a small amount, such as 6 mg per day, can offer dental benefits, with up to 20 mg daily providing the full range of health advantages.
